DETAILED ITINERARY – Small group tour
Day 1 – Saturday
We will start the tour in Cluj‑Napoca as it will allow us to cover both Maramures and Transylvania region in a week. You will spend the first and last night in the city of Cluj and the other nights are spent at comfortable traditional rural guesthouses so you get a real flavor of rural Romania.
Upon arrival you will be transferred from the airport and meet the rest of the group in the evening for dinner.

Day 2 – Sunday
This Romania group tour includes the two most interesting regions of Romania. We will start with Maramures where you will find one of the last authentic rural cultures in Europe where small scale farming, wooden houses and churches can be found in every village. You will visit the 300 years old wooden church from Surdesti, UNESCO site which is also the tallest wooden church in the world.
You will continue with the fascinating and unique Merry Cemetary from Sapanta. While most cemeteries in Romania are dominated by black, gray and white, in this cemetery the crosses are colorfully painted and feature a witty poem and a relevant scene from the life of the deceased.
Next on your Romania group tour is the Memorial Museum of the Victims of Communism. Also known as the Museum of Arrested Thought, it is a former prison where many of Romania’s important figures were held captive and tortured during the beginning of the communist period. You will learn about the history of the regime and the impact 40 years of communism had on the country.

Day 3 – Monday
Maramures is considered the last truly rural region in Europe for a reason. Here you can still see bell shaped handmade haystacks, locals traveling by horse cart, natural whirlpool washing machines are still used and some houses are still covered with handmade wooden shingles. Here many of the houses, churches and gates are still made from wood and locals still raise a few cows, chicken and pigs in their courtyard. It really gives the feeling of stepping back in time.
So we will spend the entire day learning about how things are done the old way, meet locals and also visit the Barsana monastery, one of the highlights of the region.

Day 4 – Tuesday 16 June/ Tuesday 15 September
We travel from Maramrues region to the more famous region of Transylvania, the largest one in Romania. Since the Middle Ages it was at the crossroads of great empires so it has been heavily fortified over the past millennia. You will understand this by visiting the enchanting town of Sighisoara, a medieval citadel build by German Saxon settlers on the top of a hill overlooking far in the distance. As you wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets, we’ll feel as though we’ve stepped back in time. Amid the medieval atmosphere you will admire the colorful houses, the imposing fortress towers, and the Clock Tower, a symbol of the city’s rich history.
Transylvania is also a wine region and you will try some crisp white wines including the local Feteasca Regala variety, the queen of Romanian whites and which originates from a nearby town.
Rural life in Transylvania will be best experienced by staying in a traditional village such as Viscri or Crit where there are efforts to preserve the heritage and at the same time allow for traditional occupations to continue.

Day 5 – Wednesday
This day is entirely dedicated to staying in Viscri and experiencing Transylvanian rural life first hand.
You will have time to explore the village and its surroundings, see the cows going out to pasture in the morning and returning in the evening, visit the workshop of the local blacksmith, or go for a relaxing walk in nature. And you will also travel like locals do, by horse cart to a nearby sheepfold up in the hills to see how they tend the sheep and milk them by hand like it is been done for centuries.
Viscri is also one of the favorite places of HRM King Charles III; he owns a house here and used to visit yearly. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is home to a fortified church built in the 13th century which you will get to see.

Day 6 – Thursday
Let’s take a deeper dive into the past on this Romania group tour! You will learn more about Romania’s history by quickly crossing into another historic region named Wallachia where you’ll visit Peleș Castle in Sinaia, the ornate summer palace of Romania’s first king.
Then on to Bran Castle, perched on rocky heights, and tastefully decorated by the queen in the 1920s. Among the many rooms of the castle, you will encounter a room named after “Bram Stoker” where you can find out the story of Vlad the Impaler, the man behind Dracula’s legend.
The next stop is Brasov, a fortress town laid in a valley and surrounded by beautiful mountains. By visiting the Romanian and German Saxon quarters, the famous Black Church, Catherine’s Gate and the defensive walls and towers you will understand more about the role this town and Transylvania in general had in protecting Europe from Eastern invaders.

Day 7 – Friday
After breakfast, you’ll visit a traditional coppersmith Roma family and learn about their centuries‑old craft making stills for fruit brandy (palinca), as well as delicate copper items for daily use. And ‘taste” their handiwork — both crafted and distilled.
Then travel on the legendary Transfăgărășan road, once named by Top Gear the “World’s Best Road Trip.” Let the twisting road, mountain vistas, and the magnificent forest thrill you.
As you start to go up, you can see the Fagaras Mountain looming ahead. Along the way and at the highest point of the road you will make stops to take in the landscape.
Your journey continues to Sibiu, a medieval jewel and former European Capital of Culture where you will have a guided walking tour through its charming old town.

Day 8 – Saturday
On our way back towards Cluj, we’ll stop first at Corvin Castle, one of the grandest Gothic structures in Transylvania. Built in the 15th century it is a picture-perfect castle, complete with an encircling river, huge entrance bridge, tall observation and defensive towers. It has a knights’ hall, a torture room and quite a few legends to tell.
Then travel to Alba‑Iulia, centerpiece of Romanian unity in 1918. Having a Vauban-style star shape, Alba Iulia fortress has a special historical importance for Romanians, as it was here in 1918 that Transylvania was united with the rest of Romania to form the current territory. Here you will visit the Union Hall and Unification Cathedral, along with one of the oldest Catholic churches in Romania, and some majestic baroque entrance gates.
Finally, go underground at Turda Salt Mine, an extraordinary subterranean world with huge chambers, a lake you can row on, even amusements like mini‑golf and Ferris wheel in some parts and … benefit from the healthy, salty air.
In the last evening of our small group tour of Romania we will get to reflect on our experience and how Romania is … simply surprising!

In the morning you’ll be transferred to the airport to catch your flight home.

About this Romania Group Tour
This is a shared tour for a small group of travelers (3 to 6) and it can also be organized as a private tour for a different group size.
Children of at least 12 years old can join. If you have younger children and would like to take this tour, it is better to have it as a private tour.
The tour starts and ends in Cluj Napoca (not Bucharest) which is the second largest city in Romania and has an airport well connected to many European cities and has many connections to other continents through airlines like Lufthansa, Swissair, Turkish, LOT.

- Accommodation for 8 nights in a double room (with private bathroom), breakfast included:
- 2 nights in Cluj at a 3* central hotel
- 5 nights at rural guesthouses in Maramureș (2 nights) and Transylvania (Viscri or Criț, 3 nights)
- 1 night in Sibiu at a 4* hotel
The main differences between a hotel and a rural guesthouse are:
- Guesthouses are usually owned and run by a local family and are located in a small village.
- The food offered is traditional dishes with a set menu (no à la carte).
- Rooms and bathrooms are usually simple and small (hairdryer may be missing or plug in the bathroom, no AC).
- Rooms are not serviced every day.
- There is no bar or 24h reception.
- Internet usually works in the dining room and in some, but not all, of the rooms.
- Rooms are very comfortable and clean, offering a more authentic Romanian experience.
- Meals: 5 dinners (fixed menus usually include a soup or starter, main dish, dessert, and a drink) and 1 wine tasting.
- Transfers along the itinerary by sedan/SUV car for up to 3 people or minivan for 4-6 people.
- 1 horse cart ride of about 2 hours.
- Airport transfers on arrival and departure days.
- Visits to craftsmen and workshops mentioned in the itinerary.

Prices, Payment and Cancellations
- The price is for a group of 3 to 7 people.
- The price is calculated for payment done through bank transfer or Wise.com. Payment is also possible through credit card or PayPal, in this case an additional 5.5% will be added to cover the transaction fees.
- Payments:
- Down payment of 800 EUR/person to confirm the spot.
- Due amount to be paid 35 days before the tour start date.
- If canceling participation in the tour, the following penalties apply:
- No penalties if cancelled/postponed before making the first down payment.
- 50% of the down payment if cancelled/postponed after making the first down payment and up to 46 days before the tour start date.
- 100% of the down payment if cancelled/postponed 31–45 days before the tour start date.
- 35% of the total if canceling 16–30 days before the tour start date.
- 50% of the total if canceling 8–15 days before the tour start date.
- 65% of the total if canceling 3–7 days before the tour start date.
- 80% of the total if canceling 2 days or less before the tour start date.
- These amounts will be non-refundable in case of later cancellation (even due to COVID-related matters, travel restrictions, or health issues).
- If we don’t have at least 3 people signed up 90 days before the tour start date, we will return the money you have paid. Please book flights which are refundable or book them after this date. Alternatively, we can discuss the option of having a private tour and the price for it.
